What is Moringa?

Popularly known as “The Miracle Tree” Moringa is a nutritional power-house of minerals, antioxidants and amino acids. In the ancient world, the tree was regarded as a “Cure-All tree”, an “Elixir of Long Life”, or “The Tree of Life”.  It is a multipurpose plant:  the roots, leaves, pods, flowers, fruits, seeds and even the bark of the tree can be utilized and used to cure various diseases.  Scientifically, it is known as Moringa oleifera .

Moringa oleifera (Moringaceae) is a tree native to India, and cultivated in all the tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world.  All of its parts (leaves, flowers, fruits, wood and seeds) are used for their pharmacological and nutritional properties.  As an example, the crushed seeds are known for their very high capacity to purify drinking water and are used to obtain significant amounts of drinking water from rivers.

Due to its nutritional, therapeutic and prophylactic benefits, it is has recently been widely promoted in poverty-stricken areas to counter malnutrition and the effects can be seen within a few days of including it in the diet.  The leaves can also be dried, ground into powder and stored for many months without any significant loss of nutritional or therapeutic values.  There are no side-effects of Moringa tree leaves.  Moringa can be consumed by small children and adults alike.  Therefore, many people have started using it in tea, in salads, pastas, bakery, soups, etc…

Nutritional properties of Moringa will vary depending on the moisture content, but on average, it is said that the leaves contain the following comparative values of essential nutrients:

• Rich in VITAMIN A, containing FOUR times more Vitamin A or beta-carotene than carrots.

• Rich source of VITAMIN C, containing SEVEN times more Vitamin C than oranges.

• Rich source of CALCIUM, containing FOUR times more calcium than milk.

• Rich source of PROTEIN, containing TWICE the protein present in milk.

• Rich source of POTASSIUM, containing SEVEN times more potassium than bananas.

• Rich source of IRON, containing THREE times more iron than spinach.

The leaves of Moringa oleifera are rich sources of dietary fibers, starch, beta-carotene, minerals (zinc, magnesium, and selenium), iodine, lutein, zeatin, etc.

10 grams of Moringa oleifera tree leaf powder per day cover:

Calcium

• About 30% of the recommended daily intake for children between 1 and 3 years old.
• About 25% of the recommended daily intake for children between 4 and 9 years old as well as adult women.
• About 15% of the recommended daily intake for teenagers and women over 55.

Iron

• About 30% of the recommended daily intake for children between 1 and 12 years old.
• About 15% of the daily recommended intake for teenagers.
• About 20% of the daily recommended intake for adults over 55.
• About 12% of the recommended daily intake for adult women.
• About 7% of the recommended daily intake for pregnant women.

Vitamin A

• 50 to 100% of the recommended daily intake for all population categories.

Vitamin C

A study from Sri Lanka showed that on average, leafy vegetables lose 32% of their vitamin C content when they are boiled for five minutes, and 54% in ten minutes. Steaming is less damaging, with 15% loss in five minutes and 39% loss in ten minutes. Cooking Moringa oleifera tree leaves or Moringa oleifera tree leaf powder the least possible time is thus a good way to preserve the vitamin C content.

Beta-carotene

The World Vegetable Centre (AVRDC, Taiwan) showed that the retention of total carotene and beta-carotene of Moringa oleifera tree leaves was enhanced by adding oil to the leaves during pressure cooking (76-99% of retention with oil against 46-63% without).

Iron

The bioavailability of nutrients is the ability they have to be digested and used by the human body. The bioavailability of the iron provided by plants is lower than when provided by meat. A good way to improve the availability of iron to the body is to add vitamin C to the dish. This can be done by using lemon juice, lemon peel or fresh tomatoes.

This thing works from the first scoop! I take it with orange juice, didn't work in smoothies for me. Take half of the dose twice - before sleep and in the morning. I started to sleep better right away. 500g goes long way, definitely will buy more!
